Successful organization of the workshop “How Artificial Intelligence (AI) Impacts Sustainability Reporting”

On the afternoon of August 13, 2024, the Becamex Business School at EIU organized a workshop titled “How Artificial Intelligence (AI) Impacts Sustainability Reporting,” featuring keynote speaker Professor Tâm Nguyễn (PhD, FCCA, CPA Australia, PGCHE, FHEA) from Nottingham Trent University (UK).

The workshop attracted many lecturers and students interested in sustainability issues and the role of AI in creating and analyzing corporate sustainability reports.

During the event, Professor Tâm Nguyễn highlighted the importance of AI in assisting businesses with tracking and assessing sustainability reporting. He discussed the applications of machine learning and automation in helping companies collect and analyze data, as well as predict trends in energy usage, natural resource consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. He emphasized that AI not only optimizes data collection and analysis processes but also evaluates and forecasts trends related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, thereby supporting organizations in making more effective strategic decisions.

Throughout the workshop, participants actively contributed their thoughts and raised various questions regarding the challenges and opportunities of applying AI in practice. One of the key areas of interest was the relationship between ESG criteria and corporate financial performance. Professor Tâm Nguyễn noted that numerous studies have demonstrated the link between implementing ESG management practices and improved financial outcomes. He also introduced several metrics and frameworks such as GRI, SASB, and TCFD that can help businesses track and measure ESG criteria more precisely, thereby enhancing overall performance and advancing toward sustainability goals.

The application of AI for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in sustainability reporting was another issue brought up during the discussion. In response, Professor Tâm Nguyễn expressed concern about the accessibility and implementation of AI for businesses with limited financial and technical resources, especially for Vietnamese companies seeking to penetrate international consumer markets.

The workshop offered new perspectives and laid the groundwork for future collaborations, particularly research initiatives aimed at promoting AI applications in sustainability within the university, amid a societal shift toward prioritizing sustainability goals.
