Academic advisor

I. Introduction

The Academic Advisor was established in 2019. Academic Advisor supports students with all matters related to their studies, including providing guidance, assisting with course registration planning, and helping to design a study pathway based on students’ abilities and aspirations, thereby facilitating them to graduate as they wish.

Academic Advisors provide the following services:

1. Academic policies and regulations consultation

  • Present and explain the structure of the curriculum and academic regulations.
  • Address any questions related to academic policies and regulations.

2. Academic guidance and goal setting

  • Advise students on setting study goals for each semester and academic year.
  • Assist in developing study plans to achieve the set goals.
  • Evaluate academic performance and provide guidance to students at the end of each semester.
  • Advise and support students in selecting majors that match their abilities and interests.

3. Course registration and timetable consultation

  • Advise students in choosing suitable courses and prioritizing course selections.
  • Assist students in proposing new courses and adjusting timetables appropriately.
  • Provide guidance in creating timetables that fit students’ needs and capabilities.

4. Monitoring and evaluating academic progress

  • Track students’ academic progress to provide reminders, warnings, and support when necessary.
  • Advise on solutions for students facing difficulties in their studies.

5. Encouraging participation in skill development classes

  • Identify students’ limitations and recommend suitable soft skill or specialized knowledge training programs.

6. Establishing communication channels between parents and the university

  • Collaborate with families to guide, remind, and monitor students’ academic progress.
  • Foster understanding among the three parties—university, parents, and students—to provide the most suitable support and solutions for students.

1. For Students

  • Build and maintain a collaborative relationship with their Academic Advisor.
  • Maintain a respectful and inclusive advising environment.
  • Schedule regular appointments and/or maintain regular contact with their Academic Advisor each semester.
  • Understand the curriculum, graduation requirements, and the university’s academic policies and regulations.
  • Come prepared with academic records (for the first advising session) and discussion questions before meeting the advisor.
  • Take an active role in their learning and be responsible for their academic decisions.

2. For Academic Advisors

  • Build and maintain a collaborative relationship with students.
  • Maintain a respectful and inclusive advising environment.
  • Encourage open dialogue that results in productive outcomes after each advising session.
  • Prepare students’ academic records to facilitate effective advising sessions.
  • Stay updated on professional development to enhance advising capabilities.

All students are required to meet with their Academic Advisor at least once each semester to review their academic progress and receive guidance on their study plan before course registration. Students are encouraged to proactively contact their advisor for additional academic information, explore available resources, and ensure they meet graduation requirements.

1. How to Contact an Academic Advisor

Students can contact their Academic Advisor through several methods, including email, phone, or in-person meetings.

  • Email is one of the most commonly used communication channels. Students can send questions or concerns to their advisor’s personal email here, or to the Academic Advising Department at: advising@eiu.edu.vn
  • Phone: Call 0274 222 1186 during office hours, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
  • In-person: Visit your Academic Advisor at the Student Affairs Office (Room 101, Block 5) during office hours, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

2. Preparation Before Meeting Your Academic Advisor

To make the most of advising meetings, students should:

2.1. Prepare a complete Academic Record Portfolio for the first advising session (Students may use the printing services available at the EIU Library.)

  • Student Information Form: Complete all required information and obtain a parent’s signature.
  • Individual Planning Sheet: Fill in personal details. This form helps students plan their study pathway each semester and year until graduation.
  • Student–Advisor Meeting Records Form: Fill in full name and student ID.
  • Upload the Academic Record Portfolio templates on the university website.

2.2. To ensure the most effective advising session, students are encouraged to prepare questions and concerns in advance before meeting with their Academic Advisor.
