EIU Students explore sustainable development solutions at Becamex Tokyu

On October 31, students enrolled in the pilot course “Interdisciplinary Community Project Course – ICPC 200” took part in a field trip to the Hikari Complex and SORA Garden II, operated by Becamex Tokyu. This key activity of the course aims to provide students with firsthand exposure to sustainable development models currently being implemented in the local community.

Students participating in the field trip

The program brought together 16 students from the Schools of Engineering (SOE), School of Computing and Information Technology (CIT), and Becamex Business School (BBS), accompanied by faculty mentors and project advisors. During the visit, students explored two exemplary green technologies: Sustainable composting cycle at Hikari: gaining insights into eco-friendly waste management and recycling processes.Renewable energy: visiting the solar panel system and witnessing Becamex Tokyu’s strong commitment to clean energy use.

Beyond observation, students engaged in direct discussions with technical representatives from Becamex Tokyu as well as faculty and advisors from EIU. These multi-perspective exchanges focused on operational processes, challenges, and the potential to expand green initiatives. Drawing from real-world perspectives, the interdisciplinary teams began outlining and developing project ideas that combine engineering and technology thinking with business insights and community responsibility.

The trip clearly embodied the spirit of ICPC 200: learning through experience, connecting interdisciplinary knowledge, and applying it to address real-world issues. Through this, students not only strengthened their academic understanding but also cultivated creativity, collaboration skills, and a sense of social contribution.
