On the morning of September 30, 2020, Eastern International University (EIU) held its regular Vision Alignment session themed “Curriculum Development and Teaching to Achieve Learning Outcomes Using a KPI-Based Approach,” featuring a presentation by Assoc. Prof. Dr Le Van Hao.
Curriculum development and teaching to achieve learning outcomes using a KPI-based approach is one of the methods used to develop university-level academic programs in many countries with advanced education systems. However, this approach is still relatively new and has not been widely adopted in Vietnam.
Therefore, the 10th Vision Alignment session provided an opportunity for Assoc. Prof. Dr Le Van Hao and the EIU community to learn about and discuss KPIs, the benefits of setting KPIs for learning outcomes, and how to effectively use a KPI-based approach to achieve these outcomes.
After introducing key concepts such as educational philosophy, educational objectives, academic programs, program learning outcomes, KPIs, and the alignment between educational philosophy, educational objectives, program learning outcomes, and course learning outcomes, Assoc. Prof. Dr Le Van Hao explained in detail the benefits of developing a KPI system for learning outcomes, including:
+ Help define learning outcomes more clearly based on expected results, making them easier to observe and measure.
+ Support the design of academic program structures and course learning outcomes, as well as the selection of teaching methods and methods for assessing learning activities.
+ Help measure the level of achievement of program learning outcomes for individual students or an entire student cohort.
During the session, many EIU faculty members joined the discussion and raised questions for Assoc. Prof. Dr Le Van Hao about how to objectively and accurately evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning based on a KPI system, as well as the criteria and standards needed to develop such a system.
Through the session, EIU gained new perspectives on designing, developing, and improving the quality of its academic programs.
