EIU Vision Alignment – “Risk Management in Higher Education Institutions”

On the morning of April 26, 2023, Eastern International University (EIU) held its regular Vision Alignment session for April 2023, themed “Risk Management in Higher Education Institutions.” The session featured a presentation by Assoc. Prof. Dr Le Van Hao – Head of Academic Excellence, Office of Academic Affairs at EIU, and was attended by members of the Board of Presidents, along with EIU faculty and staff.

During the session, Assoc. Prof. Dr Le Van Hao introduced key concepts related to risk and risk management, including how to manage risks using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the processes for managing and addressing risks in higher education institutions. Risk management involves a set of processes to identify, assess, manage, and control unexpected events or situations to ensure that project objectives are achieved effectively.

Higher education institutions may face risks in various areas, such as governance, education, science and technology, human resources, finance, and facilities. Therefore, the Vision Alignment session provided an opportunity for EIU faculty and staff to learn about different types of risks, understand how to identify them, and explore key principles and approaches to managing these risks.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Le Van Hao shares insights during the session.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr Le Van Hao, higher education institutions need risk management to proactively identify opportunities arising from risks, effectively manage their activities, demonstrate institutional autonomy, and protect their core values. Effective risk management not only helps higher education institutions minimize potential risks and their impacts but also creates opportunities to achieve better outcomes.

In the afternoon of the same day, members of the Board of Presidents and leaders of EIU’s schools, departments, centers, library, and other units attended a discussion on organizing risk management activities at EIU. Participants also worked on developing risk management plans and practiced handling different risk scenarios in higher education.

Risk management plays an important role in maintaining a balance between protecting the university’s assets, ensuring the benefits of its activities, and fulfilling its mission. Through the session, EIU faculty and staff gained new knowledge about risk management, learned how to apply risk management principles in their individual work, and became better prepared for the university’s upcoming institutional accreditation.
