From CV to interviews: EIU students approaching to the labor market form the employer’s perspective

On January 28, the Office of Community Engagement of Eastern International University (EIU), in collaboration with CareerViet, organized a workshop entitled “Your First Career Shock: You’re Good – So Why Is Your CV Still Rejected?”.

Dr Ho Nhut Quang – Advisor of University Council/Board of Directors, and Director of Honors Program sharing at the workshop

At the workshop, Mr Nguyen Tien Dung, Head of Human Resources at CareerViet, shared practical insights from an employer’s perspective. According to Mr Nguyen Tien Dung, many candidates with strong professional competencies are eliminated at the initial screening stage due to basic mistakes in their CVs, such as illogical layout, overly lengthy information, failure to highlight personal value, or CVs that are not “tailored” to specific job positions. A CV should not merely be a list of achievements; it needs to clearly demonstrate core competencies, relevant experience, and the candidate’s suitability for the organization.

In addition, the HR Manager of CareerViet emphasized the importance of preparing for the interview stage. A strong CV is only a “ticket to entry,” while the interview is the real opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their potential. Students should focus on developing communication skills, providing clear and honest responses, and learning how to present their career stories in a convincing manner. Researching the company and the position in advance, as well as demonstrating a proactive and professional attitude, are also important factors that can help candidates make a positive impression on recruiters.

Through practical examples and real-life scenarios, Mr Nguyen Tien Dung highlighted several key points to help students avoid common pitfalls when applying for jobs. He also helped students better understand why many capable candidates may still fail to secure a position. These insights not only provided valuable guidance but also encouraged students to reassess their CVs and professional skills, enabling them to better prepare for their upcoming career journeys.

The workshop provided students from various faculties at EIU with an opportunity to gain practical knowledge, enhance soft skills, and gain a clearer understanding of employers’ recruitment requirements. As a result, students are better equipped and more confident as they enter the labor market.
